The Overview

On July 4th, 2026, the United States turns 250 years old. Every state has a way to mark the milestone, but North Dakota has something no other state can claim: Theodore Roosevelt.

To celebrate America’s semiquincentennial, we created a North Dakota 250th logo kit, a free, open-source visual kit built specifically for North Dakota and the launch of the presidential library. It’s yours to use, share, and make your own.

The Opportunity

Theodore Roosevelt’s first term began in 1901, making him the exact halfway point between the founding of the United States and today! That’s not a coincidence we could ignore. As other states celebrate America’s birthday with a national lens, North Dakota gets to tell a story uniquely its own: the story of the Rough Rider and conservationist, the president who shaped the American West.

Look closely at the “250” and you’ll find it: subtle details transform the numbers into an abstract pair of Roosevelt’s iconic round glasses. The top of the 5 doubles as a nose bridge, and a small loop on the 2 suggests the lanyard piece from Teddy Roosevelt’s vintage glasses.

The typography is drawn from the turn of the century to echo the era Roosevelt defined. And rather than defaulting to a standard red, white, and blue, we pulled color from his military uniform: brass buttons, navy wool, and antique canvas white. The result is patriotic, but distinctly North Dakotan.
